That was an interesting question from a typical young Pakistani who is loyal and patriotic to the country. Normally people think about spies and agents like James Bond 007 who goes on a mission and meet beautiful girls and come back successful. Well, that is one part of spying and espionage. The way Pakistani agents serving their foreign masters is a bit subtle and sinister. I have discussed some in the upcoming book and exposed them in the articles. People trust journalists more than the spies and agency operatives as they don’t have any loyalties to the sources but journalists do. I have seen many journalists threatened with imprisonment by the state but they did not disclose their sources following the journalistic code of ethics. Most civilized countries have a declassifying system for the official government records and obviously, those who have signed the official secrets act of the country don’t write books or come on TV channels to discuss their missions and details? Only in Pakistan you can do and get away with it. For example, Lt. General Asad Durrani was assigned a task by the President of Pakistan Ghulam Ishaq Khan to counter Benazir Bhutto who was compromised on Pakistan’s nuclear program and Indian affairs. The president ordered to dislodge her without creating too many currents keeping in view Pakistan’s ground realities. It was his oath to keep that secret as ISI chief but he behaved worst than an informant. He broke his oath, violated the official secrets act of Pakistan by giving an affidavit to FIA director Rehman Malik. The only attraction for him probably was to get posting as an ambassador. She was also 2nd wife of ZA Bhutto like her. Since then we had no real oil and gas mining in Baluchistan for the past 68 years. Was that mission of Nahid Afghamy or much more? We don’t know.

One day the British deputy commissioner of Amritsar told him `casually that:’Gurdaspur district is likely to go to India’. The award of Gurdaspur gave India a land corridor to Jammu and Kashmir and so enabled it to Occupy the territory after three months.
A preliminary version of the award was ready on 8th August 1947. The definitive version was with the Viceroy, Lord Mountbatten (1.1979) on 12 August. However, Mountbatten informed India and Pakistan on 16 August- after the `process of the Transfer of Power had been completed’. M M Ahmad gives no date when this `top secret’ information was given to him. However, instead of rushing to report the matter to the Government of Pakistan, he traveled to Qadiyan to inform his `khalifa’. This contrasted with I the conduct of Indian officers who immediately reported any sensitive leak or information to Nehru (d.1964) and Nehru took it up with Mountbatten. General Gracey the Army Chief of Pakistan did not send troops to the Kashmir front and refused to obey the order given by Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Governor-General of Pakistan. Gracey argued that Jinnah as Governor-General represented the British Crown of which he himself was an appointee. It was the second time Pakistan missed the opportunity to take Kashmir following the ‘partition formula’. Ignoring the legitimate stand of Pakistan and MA Jinnah on Palestine Sir Zafrullah Khan (Qadiyani) was able to say publicly in Cairo ‘in February 1952 that Israel must be ‘regarded as a limb in the body of the Middle East’. He further urged Egypt to seek a peaceful solution to the conflict, in other words, to give up any thought, of liberating Arab and Palestinian lands and recognize the illegitimate occupation of Palestine. After the US-sponsored assassination of Prime minister Liaquat Ali Khan, Pakistan was led into one military alliance after another: a Mutual Defence Agreement’ with the US (May 1954), SEATO (September 1954), and Baghdad Pact (February 1955). After the overthrow of the Iraqi monarchy, Baghdad Pact was christened as CENTO (Central Treaty Organization). Although Pakistan had no security conflict in that region, ‘Zafrullah had put the country into South-East Asia Treaty Organization, without consulting or even telling the army. The commander-in-chief, ‘General Ayub Khan, said he was informed only after Pakistan had joined the alliance. The other character was M M Ahmad born in (1913-2002) was reputedly one of Pakistan’s most powerful bureaucrats. He belonged to the elite ICS (Indian Civil Service, later, (CSP or the Civil Service of Pakistan) and was a district officer in 1947, but by 1966, he had risen to head Ayub Khan’s powerful Planning Commission. He helped to shape the Country’s economic as well as defense and foreign policies. Ayub Khan also wished Arab states to join the Baghdad Pact and turn it into a `powerful Muslim forum’, but he understood why they were suspicious of the alliance. However, although he did have foreign ministers like Manzur Qadir (1959-62; d. 1972) and Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada (1966-68), both pro-western but also Pakistani, but key policy decision had also to be cleared with a Qadiyani bureaucrat M M Ahmad. Though only the head of Ayub Khan’s Planning Commission, he had come to exercise a veto over political decisions as well. In an as yet unpublished interview, the eminent constitutional expert and authority on Quaid-e-Azam Jinnah (d.1948) and Pakistan movement, Sharifuddin Pirzada also, told Ahmed Irfan a London based journalist that as far back as October 1967, French President Charles de Gaulle (d.1970) had offered Pakistan ‘full’ nuclear assistance and know-how; the only thing he wanted, in turn, was to he (France) should be allowed to mine for uranium in Northwest Pakistan for a 50% share. In April 1965, Ayub Khan had also gone to Moscow. This was the first-ever visit by a Pakistani leader to the Soviet capital. Ayub Khan came back with the understanding that the visit `might prove a turning point in our relations and that there were tremendous possibilities of cooperation’. The Soviets had actually agreed to give military aid to Pakistan, but writing two years later Ayub Khan had to understate the achievement because the same Qadiyani bureaucrat too had vetoed this. There he rose to be the deputy executive secretary of the joint Development Committee in 1974. However, M M Ahmad’s imprint on Pakistan’s fiscal and development policies was to last forever. As Yahya Khan’s ‘finance minister’, he devalued the rupee by 131% percent. As one economist pointed out (Dawn, Karachi, 1st February 2002), ‘that was the start of the deficit finance, inflation and trade imbalance’ from which the country has not been able to free itself. In 1974 Bhutto amended the constitution to clarify the non-Muslim slants of (the Oadiyani creed to which M M Ahmad belonged; yet influence over the country’s bureaucratic and political elite remained unaffected. Many owed their position to his patronage and almost everyone wanted to benefit front his Washington connections’. In 1993, then army chief Abdul Waheed Kakar was looking for a caretaker prime minister to replace Nawaz Sharif. M M Ahmad is believed to have solved the ‘problem. The job went to Moeen Qureshi, who had recently retired as executive vice president of the World Bank; He was given a Pakistani `passport’ on arrival. MM Ahmad kept a low profile, but after October 1999 coup, he seemed to have become the regime’s `holy man’. He was the grandson of the Qadiyani `prophet’, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad Qadiyani, (d.1908) and son-in-law of the second Qadiyani `khalifa’, Mirza Bashiruddin Mahmud Ahmad (d.1965). Besides being an international bureaucrat, M M Ahmad was all active `missionary’ of his Qadiyani creed. After retiring from the World Bank in 1984 he formally became the `amir’ and missionary in charge’ of the group in the US with headquarters in Silver Spring, Maryland. While many power holders in Pakistan seemed proud of being `secular’, for MM Ahmad, it was his `religious’ vocation as a Qadiyani that really defined his relationship with Pakistan. The relationship was in conflict with the existence of Pakistan itself. According to a Qadiyani `prophecy’, revealed a few months before the independence of Pakistan, if at all India and Pakistan did separate, it would be `transient’ and the Qadiyanis were asked to try to bring an end to this phase soon. (Al Fzal, 4 April 1947 and 17 May 194’7) We hear of M M Ahmad in another CSP officer, Qudratullhah Shihab’s memoirs, Slihab Nama, (Sang-e-Meel, Lahore, 1991) that the 1965 war with ‘India was ‘a Qadiyani conspiracy’. It was planned by an able (Qadiyani officer, Major General Akhtar Hussain Malik’ and `backed by several powerful people, among them, at the lot of list was said to be Mr MM Ahmad’. Peerzada was Principal Staff Officer to President Yahya and Brig. M I Kareem his deputy. For M M Ahmad, however, helping to end the `transient’ was a duty ordained by his khalifa’. Born on 28 February 1913, in Qadiyan, Gurdaspur, M M Ahmad died on 23, Ju1y 2002, Washington DC and was buried, 30th July 2002, ‘in Baltishti Maqbrah’ in Ghenahnagar (formerly Ribwah), Pakistan. An Excessively Long Tribute-ish to Shahid Afridi Part 0: The late-90s, The Pakistan Cricket Team and a Boy

I’ve been a fan of the Pakistan cricket team for the last 20 years. I’ve tried several treatments, but I’m afraid it’s terminal.
All at once it has been brilliant, confusing, troubling, frustrating and horrifying. To read the Qayyum report is to question every loss suffered by a tremendously talented but frustratingly inconsistent team.
On this lazy Sunday afternoon of my childhood, I watched Shaun Pollock gun the Pakistani top order down like they weren’t even trying. I look back now and a small part of me perversely hopes that some bookie greased the palms that held those bats. At least then there would be a sensible explanation to go with the scars in my brain. The fact that they only ended up losing by nine runs made this one of the most Pakistani cricket games ever.
Even as jubilant as I was when Pakistan moved on to the knockout stage in the 1999 world cup, I still had a funny feeling about this meaningless loss to Bangladesh. 40 extras conceded? Three Pakistani batsmen ran themselves out? I was NINE YEARS OLD and I could smell the rot all the way in Karachi. Specific allegations to that effect have been reported here, but I’d rather not dwell upon alleged skullduggery any more than I already have in this piece.
How I grew to hate the word ‘mercurial’ that apologetic foreign journalists bandied about as they struggled to explain the wafted shots and horrible collapses of the 10 years surrounding the turn of the millennium. ‘On their best day…’ ,they would qualify, as they listed the difficulties of playing the Pakistan team. They were transparent euphemisms for the main problem with the team: a sick over-reliance on the stars of the team (‘hero ball’, in basketball parlance).
Every Pakistan batting innings of my young life felt like nine parts flailing dumbass-ery and two parts gritty-grindy progress. I’m being facetious, of course: sometimes, all at once, you got 11 asshats flailing (and a partridge in pear tree if you were lucky).
For me, the most painful part of this was that we never really got to know exactly how good the team’s bowling attack could have been. When I look at the list of all bowlers who have taken at least 200 ODI wickets and sort it by bowling average, I see two things:

Alan ‘White Lightning’ Donald was every bit the champion and destroyer of worlds that I remember. It is a farce that the ICC has a Hall of Fame and Alan Donald isn’t in it. It’s been around for literally 6 years and it’s already got the same grave and pompous disconnect from reality that the baseball hall of fame does.
The Pakistan bowling attack of the late -90s might have been the most talented bowling attack in the history of ODI cricket. In that moment, so many shining stars aligned:

Wasim Akram and Waqar Younis both in their glorious late-primes
You probably didn’t know that at the time of his retiring, Saqlain Mushtaq had the best Strike Rate of any spinner in the history of ODI cricket (by a hefty margin too).
Abdul Razzak, Azhar Mahmood and freaking Shoaib Akhtar (at his toe crushing best) were used to fill out the rest of the bowling line up

To send this crew out to defend a non-existent total in the ’99 World Cup Final was an indignity of the highest order. No amount of guts or clutchness or talent could fix something like that. They deserved better. They often deserved better.
SO, this was the environment of the late-90s in Pakistan cricket. This was the stage, these were the players and that was the drama. Distrust and politicking. Fixing and gambling. A team divided against itself because of failures on one or both sides of the ball.
And into this rambling madness, into this complicated web of confusion, into this hot and dusty storm walked a young Shahid Afridi.
At the time we didn’t know what he would come to represent. We weren’t to know that Shahid Afridi was about to become Pakistan cricket’s Id. Whether this was a good, necessary or productive thing isn’t yet known either.
Here’s what I do know: When we went out to our square of Karachi’s scorched asphalt and bashed the taped-tennis-ball as hard as we could, we were not emulating him.
When he went out to face the Alan Donalds, the Glenn Mcgraths and the Curtly Ambroses of the world, he emulated us.

Misbah-ul-Haq right leader at right time for Pakistan - Mike Atherton (The Times)

Thought the people of /cricket would appreciate this article considering Misbah broke the record today. Also includes a bonus section on Amir and his return.
The night before the final of the Austral-Asia Cup in Sharjah in 1990, Imran Khan, the Pakistan captain, took a late-night call from a stranger. The message was a disturbing one: four of his players, he was told, had been bought by the bookies and would underperform against Australia the next day.
Imran, naturally, was deeply concerned. He gave much thought as to what he should do in response and decided to make his players swear an oath on the Koran that no one would underperform deliberately. Then, as belt and braces insurance, he instructed Intikhab Alam, the manager, to place all the team’s winnings in the tournament so far, $20,000, on a Pakistan win at even-money odds. Pakistan won the match comfortably.
The story is told by Osman Samiuddin in his soon-to-be-published book on Pakistan cricket, fittingly titled The Unquiet Ones. It is a superb narrative of a fascinating seven-decade-old plot, that will continue to twist and turn and surprise all. Having whitewashed Australia recently, with only three players in the team who have experienced Test match cricket on home soil, Pakistan’s good autumn continues against New Zealand in their adopted home territory of UAE.
The reason for telling the Imran anecdote is that, as Samiuddin’s book makes clear, in modern times there is a clear and undeniable link for Pakistan between captaincy, the quality and stability of it, and success on the field. From Imran, up until the World Cup victory in 1992, to Inzamam-ul-Haq, between 2003-07, and now Misbah-ul-Haq post-2010 — when he has had to deal with the double fall-out from the spot-fixing crisis under Salman Butt and his team’s dislocation from their homeland — Pakistan have had three periods of reasonable stability.
One of the peculiarities of the modern game is the way that burgeoning coaching staffs who support teams have obscured the responsibility for success or failure. When Australia’s fortunes gradually began to pick up during late 2013 and into 2014, who was responsible? Michael Clarke, the captain, or Darren Lehmann, the coach brought in during the crisis of the early months of the 2013 Ashes? When England were whitewashed in Australia where did that responsibility principally lie? With Alastair Cook, the captain, or Andy Flower, the team director, and the massive backroom staff? Given the often threadbare resources that Pakistan have had to contend with, given the regularity with which administrators come and go and given the limited and frequently changing coaching staff, the direct link between good on-field leadership and good performance is clear. It should give pause to those who argue, as Sir Clive Woodward did this summer, that cricket teams would benefit from a move to a system preferred by other sports where the captain cedes responsibility to the coach or manager.
Misbah is the latest to instil the kind of discipline and authority taken for granted under Imran, and what a choice he has proved to be. He came to the leadership on the back of a prolonged period that reads like the plot of a medieval court, full of backstabbing, disloyalty, sackings and player revolts.
Post-Imran, Pakistan have had 16 different captains and have changed the job 26 times, and of the three men who directly preceded Misbah, one (Mohammad Yousuf) was banned by the PCB, one (Shahid Afridi) walked away from the job minutes after a loss in his first Test match, and another (Butt) was found guilty of spot-fixing. An inauspicious background, to be sure. But sometimes circumstance produces exactly the right man for the right moment. At the time of his appointment, Misbah was 36 years old, out of the team, contemplating retirement after an up-and-down career that, had it ended at that point, would have left him unfulfilled, on the back an unflattering report by a board official of his nervousness during a Test match in Australia.
According to Samiuddin, it had been “a loopy, idiosyncratic career that should wring a man’s soul dry of hope and sanity and yet had left him completely untwisted and balanced”.
Misbah got the job, basically, because there was no one else. But his undiminished love of the game, his educational background (Misbah has an MBA), his frequent disappointments, and therefore his perspective on life, and his distance from the troubled court of Inzamam and the generation of players about whom suspicion lingered, left him well placed to grab his chance and make his mark. His tenure has been underpinned by personal performances that have reached new heights with the responsibility of leadership, having scored more than 2,000 runs in Tests and ODIs in 2013, and crowning it all with the remarkable (for a batsman with a reputation as a plodder) record-equalling innings against Australia for the fastest Test hundred of all time.
Three consecutive Test hundreds came his way recently — not bad for a 40-year-old.
Given the way the team have had to cope with disadvantages, such as their permanent removal from the family and friendship ties that are all-important in Pakistan, as they trudge around the international circuit for 12 months of the year, and the banning of Saeed Ajmal — their principal wicket-taker — because of an illegal action, Misbah’s team continue to confound.
As Samiuddin writes, his leadership credentials have allowed him to survive a whitewash against South Africa early last year — a rare blip — and a poor Champions Trophy that, in days gone by, would have surely resulted in immediate upheaval.
Since then, he has also survived three different chairmen of the PCB and a change of government, a stability that subverts Pakistan’s historical narrative.
Today, against New Zealand, he will break the record for Test match wins by a Pakistan captain, one more than the great Imran. An unlikely tale produced by a fortuitous collusion of man and moment.
Amir deserves right to hit ground running on Test return
The patriarchal nature of the Pakistan team, and therefore the absolute authority of the captain, is not always appreciated by outsiders. When Mohammad Amir, the young Pakistan fast bowler, told me the story three years ago of how he was pressurised to bowl two no-balls by Salman Butt, his captain, during the Lord’s Test of 2010, it was regarded by some as a lame excuse.
In The Unquiet Ones, Osman Samiuddin tells a story about how Bob Woolmer, in one of his first acts as Pakistan coach, tried to reduce the gap between old and young, those in authority and those not. During warm-ups, he brought in playing football and rugby. This was not because of any great enthusiasm for either sport among his players (Pakistan would be the worst on the circuit at pre-match football), but because he wanted the rough and tumble that resulted, so that young players could experience physical contact, through tackling, with the older members of the team. Thereby, Woolmer hoped, lessening the aura of untouchability around them. There is light at the end of the tunnel for Amir. He is four years into his ban and is scheduled to return in late 2015, possibly against England in the UAE, fitness, form and selection whims permitting.
The recent announcement of the revision of the anti-corruption code on the back of the latest ICC board meeting this week makes that more likely, given that he may now be able to play domestic cricket before his ban expires.
That revision, based on remorse, good conduct and co-operation with the Anti-Corruption Security Unit (ACSU), seems eminently fair. Amir’s ban was from international cricket for five years. It stands to reason that he ought to be able to resume it the moment his ban is over. But an inability to play any level of domestic cricket, or indeed use the PCB’s facilities to train or bowl, made that unlikely, and would in all probability have extended that ban beyond the five-year period.
Now, once the PCB puts in the application and if the ACSU accedes to that request, he may well return early to domestic cricket so that he will be fit and ready to resume his career the moment that his ban expires. He should be welcomed back.
